Dr. Joyce Anena Oyet, the in-charge of the Accident and Emergency Unit at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, says that the hospital lacks a CT Scan, Intensive Care Unit –ICU facilities, medical supplies like X-ray films and enough staff, which affects trauma care.
Dr Norah Nakato, the Hospital Principal Senior Nursing Officer says that the decision was reached following overwhelming demand for space. She says that attention will only be given to women with complications, who will be treated in a single room that was previously meant for the adolescent clinic.
The hospital has largely survived and depended on donations which accounts for 67% of the funds, 27% are generated from the hospital bills while the government only provides 5% of the support.
According to Tibamanya, they often fail to manage patients whose conditions requires oxygen because of the intermittent power supply. He attributes that the power problem to the fact they share a single line with neighbouring institutions.
