Uganda experienced a 6.9percent rise in prices in January 2014 due to food price pressures, figures from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) released today have revealed. Food prices rose by 11.1percent compared to 9.2percent recorded in December 2013. Dr Chris Mukiza, Director Macroeconomics at UBOS, said this was because of reduced supplies in the market compared to what it was in December 2013.

A row has erupted between Uganda Martyrs University—UMU Kabale Campus and local residents over a move by the University to enclose the land which the locals claim belongs to them. A 28-year old woman has been sent to jail in Kitgum district for impersonating a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer. Suzan Ageno was remanded to Kitgum Government Prison until February 12th when the case will come up again for mention. She has allegedly been moving around claiming to be Lt. Farmers in Kabarole district have invested in technologies to reduce food losses resulting from poor post-harvest handling. The farmers have been harvesting large quantities of maize and rice but most of which has been wasted due to poor cleaning, drying and storage. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Bank, sub-Sahara Africa is losing as much as four billion US dollars every year due to post-harvest grain losses.
