The staff under their umbrella body Gulu University Academic Staff Association [GUASA] and Gulu University Senior Administrative Staff Association [GUSASA] and National Union of Educational Institution [NUEI] went on strike on August 1st.
Two senior academic staff, who requested not to be disclosed say they have been waiting for the tribunal’s composition in vain. They say their cases have stalled at the tribunal due to lack of quorum.
They also argue that there are serious anomalies with the “so-called petition” and the Vice Chancellor's intervention.
Seraphine Alia, the Chief Administrative Officer Katakwi says that the debts had accumulated as a result of non-payment of suppliers of most food items, stationery and purchase of the school bus among others.
The District Inspector of Schools Gerald Nsambu says that the number of male teachers has drastically fallen in the recent past, as more of them abandon the profession for casual jobs that provide better pay than teaching.
