The wetland is a lifeline for communities in Nyabihooko, Nyabushenyi and Ruhaama Sub Counties and part of Isingiro district. But it is now covered in trenches, dug up by farmers who have started creating vegetable gardens, tree nurseries and rearing animals within the gazetted wetland area.
Alex Tabu and Charles Dama all residents of Kirasa cell in Masindi central division were on Monday arrested together with John Kiiza who had hired them to cultivate the wetland located along Masindi-Kafo road.
Charles Openy, the Olinga Village chairperson in Labala parish says the pupils are engaged in hunting edible rats in the foot Lili, Tugu, Atyeno, Kilak and Cam Got hills. He says the area consists of vast jungles rich in edible rats, antelopes, warthogs and different birds species such as guinea fowl.
