The incident comes barely 24 hours after Kanungu District Security Committee issued conditions for reopening the sand mine and put in place a committee to enforce the strict guidelines that were put in place.
Gad Ahimbisibwe Rugaju, the Kanungu Deputy Resident District Commissioner said that all sand mines in the district will remain closed until standard sand mining measures are put in place.
The incident happened at Kanyamishanga village in Katete Sub County, Kanungu district; the residents rescued five of the six victims and rushed them to Kambuga hospital for treatment.
The water project is funded by the Kanungu district local government and is intended to bring quality water and sanitation facilities to over 100 villages in Kyeshero sub- County in Kanungu district.
In 2018/2019 financial year, UWA released 600 million shillings to be shared by all sub-counties bordering Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Mpungu Sub County received 60 million shillings.
