Floods have killed two people in different areas following heavy rains that hit Isingiro District and more than hundred people have been displaced and property like gardens worth millions have been destroyed.
Mbarara Municipality Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi says that the water hyacinth has affected the bigger part of the river in the municipality and the bigger part of Buhweju, Sheema, and Mbarara districts. Kakyebezi says the situation is beyond their control and that they have been engaging NEMA to move in and save the situation.
Jeremiah Kamurali, the Isingiro LC V chairperson, says the ban takes immediate effect. According to Kamurali, they decided to ban charcoal banning when their attempts to regulate indiscriminate tree cutting in the district failed to yield results
In their December 11th petition addressed to Fabiano Bomera, the Isingiro Resident District Commissioner residents claim that they have not had any clean water supply since 2004 when the only two boreholes sank by the community broke down.
Fifty people that were evicted from Lake Nakivale protection zone in Isingiro district have sued Nema for property destruction.The complainants accuse law enforcers from the environmental watchdog and the Office of the Prime Minister of orchestrating what they call brutal and illegal eviction. Close to 20,000 households living adjacent to Lake Nakivale in Isingiro district have been targeted for eviction by NEMA to pave way for the restoration of the wetland.
