The deceased’s body was found by residents lying in a pool of blood on Kyaligonza’s in Kitindura village in Ruhunga parish Buhimba Sub County on Sunday evening.
The entire village of over 3,000 people now fetches water from a pond located five kilometres away, yet it is also shared by wild animals especially baboons and monkeys.
The accident occurred when a boat carrying 18 passengers capsized near Ususa Landing Site in Kabwoya sub-county, Kikuube district. The boat was sailing to Sebigoro Landing Site.
Authorities in Kikuube and Hoima districts had already announced a suspension of fishing activities, in line with the nationwide lockdown announced by President Yoweri Museveni, as a measure to control person to person interactions and close possible loopholes in the management of the disease.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson told Uganda Radio Network on Wednesday afternoon that the deceased was fishing with his colleague, John Kyaligonza where a hippo attacked their boat causing it to overturn and capsize.

The victims are Lampard Owinji 26 and Denis Baraka 11 both residents of Rwengabi village kaseeta parish Kabwoya sub county Kikuube district. Owinji was shot in the hand and stomach while Baraka was shot in the back.

The deceased drowned in the lake on Sunday when a group of militiamen raided the lake to rob fishing gear from Ugandan fishermen at Kijangi landing site in Buseruka Sub County, Hoima district. It is alleged that the militiamen approached the group of fishermen and ordered them to surrender their fishing gear.
