The new Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi has said his first role in the Attorney General’s Office will be to deal with questionable court awards that are currently draining the judiciary.
Batson Baguma, the president of the Uganda Association of Prosecutors said that since their inception, they have grappled with issues of stagnation in rank, poor and discriminatory pay, poor facilitation, excessive workload, and limited training opportunities among others, which have negatively affected their members.
Speaking at the ODPP’s office in Kampala while receiving prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, the new minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Charles Elemu Ogwal, said they only have 40 percent of the required staff.
In a notice of intention to sue through their lawyers of Ahabwe James and Co. Advocates, the five councillors Turyahebwa Remigious, Nkwasibwe Denis, Katuutu Lillian, Arinaitwe Robert, Kasigazi Francis and Matsipa Esther are demanding 7 million shillings as sitting allowances for the nine sessions. The members are also demanding 500,000 shillings as costs used for stationary and additional 3 million shillings incurred in seeking legal guidance.

In his defense, State Attorney Samuel Tusubira asked court to dismiss this suit calling it premature and misconceived because the ministry of health and various institutions have from time to time issued circulars that highlight the knowledge and attitudes of behavioral change to communities in food and nutrition related matters.
