One of the suspects in this case Nyanzi appears on three files containing capital offenses and high-profile murders. He was first arrested in early 2017, on charges of killing the former Police Spokesperson Kaweesi, his bodyguard and driver. He was later charged with the murder of Major Muhammad Kiggundu and his bodyguard Sergent Steven Mukasa on November 26th, 2016 in Masanafu, a Kampala city suburb.
On Tuesday, the matter came up for further pretrial hearing and the prosecution led by Lillian Omara tabled 150 pieces of evidence that included physical and documentary exhibits.
Nyanzi, who is jointly charged together with seven others in the International Crimes Division of the High Court told Justice Elizabeth Kabanda during the pre-trial session on Wednesday that when inmates appear before the court, they are confined in an isolation room, which he described as 'ekiyumba' upon their return to prisons.
Justice Paul Gadenya Wolimbwa dismissed the application on grounds that Nyanzi is facing a multiplicity of capital offences which attract a maximum sentence death penalty upon conviction and that if he was to give bail in such a matter, he would order for 150 million shillings, not cash.
According to the Prime suspect Yusuf Nyanzi, he is the sole bread winner at home where he has ten children and is not willing to interfere with investigations once released.
Nyanzi has been arraigned before the Nakawa Magistrates Court at the same time when the head of the Civil Division Justice Musa Ssekaana was expected to hear this very application demanding for his unconditional release. Nyanzi's lawyer Turyamusiima has told URN that these are the normal games played by the State which they are used to.
But after arraigning him before the International Crimes Division, Nyanzi was charged with the said three counts of murder and belonging to a terrorist group, Allied Democratic Forces.
