On Thursday, M23’s Military Spokesperson, Major Willy Ngoma released a statement claiming the defection of two FARDC- Wazalendo senior officers and more than 100 junior soldiers to M23. Ngoma said that Lieutenant-Colonel Jean-Pierre Biyoyo on Wednesday crossed to join M23 with more than 100 junior officers in Rutshuru territory while Colonel Bahati Balingengene Saddam crossed from the 21st brigade with other many junior officers.
In a statement released on Wednesday (January 3, 2024) by M23 president, Bertrand Bisimwa, Nangaa will help in coordinating activities of the alliance in South Kivu province.
“Kiwanja and others were ghost towns when you deployed, but your presence and peace support operations enabled the resumption of farming, reopening of schools, and conduct of businesses. You should go home happy because you performed as expected,” he said.
Captain Kato says that the claims are just mere propaganda and fallacy aimed at soiling the image of Ugandan troops so that it derail and divert the attention of its process of withdrawal from the mission as directed by the mandate.

General Sylvain Ekenge, the FARDC spokesperson, issued a statement on Tuesday night, declaring the army's decision to disassociate from the FDLR. Ekenge cautioned that any FARDC soldier found in alliance with the FDLR would face arrest and legal repercussions.
