Addressing Journalists at a Press Conference in Bulange-Mengo, the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga said that King Zwelithini has been very close to the Kingdom of Buganda and a close confidant of Kabaka Mutebi II.
The 71-year-old economist has been at the helm of Bank of Uganda-BoU since 2001 and in January, President Yoweri Museveni re-appointed him as Governor for the next five years pending parliament approval. Sources in the appointments committee described Mutebile as physically weak but mentally sharp.
Kadaga said that in light of the ongoing trade wars between Uganda and other East African Countries, it is crucial that focus shifts to value addition in sugarcane, maize and other produce. She said that sugarcane can for instance be turned into syrups and paper, to save Ugandans who are struggling with markets for their agricultural produce.
Witnesses included victims of arrests and torture, those who sustained wounds from gunshots and relatives of missing persons. However, the committee noted that the majority of the incidents, some of which resulted in death, were never documented or even investigated by the Human Rights Commission office in the area.
