The much-awaited establishment of ferry services at Lake Bunyonyi and the proposed upgrade of the 15-kilometre Kabale-Bunyonyi and 60-kilometer Muko-Katuna roads were pledges made by President Yoweri Museveni during campaigns that preceded the 2016 general election. However, they are yet to be fulfilled.
Godfrey Nyakahuma, Kabale Resident District Commissioner told our reporter that the smuggling of cattle has persisted due to the silent benefit of local leaders at the border. Nyakahuma discloses that security investigations have established that local leaders earn 50,000 Shillings for each cow they cleared.

Friday Noah and Aggrey Agaba, both motor vehicle mechanics say that when they were ordered to relocate from Garage Street to Mwanjari cemetery, the authorities assured them that the place was clearly zoned. They however say that on reaching, the cemetery, they found total confusion.
Last month the municipality authorities forcefully relocated taxi and bus drivers from opposite Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) Offices in Kigongi along Kabale-Mbarara road as well as Kisoro taxi park commonly known as Esso along Kisoro road in a bid to reduce congestion in town.
In 2019, the authorities moved some of the traders to the cemetery to pave way for the ongoing construction of 23 billion Shillings modern market under the World Bank-funded Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement program – MATIP III.
On Wednesday, a team of law enforcement officers from Kabale municipality backed by anti-riot police officers stormed Garage and Kigongi Street in Central division and forcefully evicted the mechanics, taxi and bus operators to move to Mwanjari cemetery.
Annet Kyomuhendo, a charcoal dealer in Kigongi in Central division Kabale municipality says that she now sells a sack of charcoal at 30,000 from 20,000 Shillings and a basin at 6,000 from 3,000 Shillings.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate says that when police made an impromptu raid on the market, they found the six suspects selling adulated fish. Maate says that selling such fish to people is thuggery and could even be dangerous to human lives.
