Kyagulanyi recently announced that he would lead peaceful demonstrations to challenge the abduction of NUP supporters, the trial of civilians in military courts, and the outcome of the January 14, presidential election, which gave Yoweri Museveni a win over 10 other presidential candidates.
Kyagulanyi claims that the Declaration of Results forms that the party collected, when tallied, clearly indicate that he won the 14th January election with 54.19%. The Electoral Commission announced National Resistance Movement -NRM’s President Museveni winner of the 2021 election with 58.64%. But according to NUP’S audits, Museveni scored only 34.83%.
In 48 Sub Counties and Town Councils in the districts Amuru, Nwoya, Omoro and Gulu, NRM took 24 seats while independent candidates scooped 12 seats. The Democratic Party –DP and Forum for Democratic Change –FDC took six positions each in the Sub –Counties and Town Councils across the four districts.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the closed-door meeting, Joel Ssenyonyi the National Unity Platform Spokesperson said that they told the EU team about the continued human rights abuses committed by security personnel on NUP supporters.
"Since the 15th of last month our offices have been under siege there is no activity we can carry from there, we have written to the Inspector General of Police, the Electoral Commission chairperson, but they are also waiting for the orders from above. This is unconstitutional,” said David Lubongoya, the NUP Secretary-General.
The race attracted seven candidates. They include Agnes Kirabo of the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM, Kasumba Gyaviira of the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC and independents; Ivan Bwowe, Simon Sennyonga, Abdul Ziritwawula, Micheal Katongole and Alvin Sembatya.
Wycliffe Mpinga, a delegate from Makindye Sabagabo division in Wakiso district said they spent a lot of money to travel from their areas to Mubende district, arguing that paying them Shillings 530,000 is unfair.
Mukambwe Faustin Lukonge, the NUP flag bearer was also elected mayor with 14,463 votes defeating the NRM party candidate and incumbent Esther Ndyanabo who polled 5,616 votes while DP’s Richard Kyambadde polled 1,889 votes.
Ssempijja through his lawyers led by Geoffrey Kandebe told the court that the same thing happened at about 25 polling stations, which gave a chance to Katabazi’s polling agents and officials to mismatch the votes and hence robbed him of his victory.
"People normally don't vote when it is raining we hope that they will come later on to vote," he said. In Nakawa East, the situation was the same. At St Mbagga Primary School in Kiwatule with 5 polling stations, by 8:00, am voting had begun at only one polling station.
