It is said that they had been hired by Democratic Party’s John Paul Mpalanyi, the newly elected MP for Kyotera County and Kyotera District Chairperson Patrick Kintu Kisekulo, to disrupt presidential, parliamentary and Local Government elections.
Kisekulo scored 30,684 votes to defeat the National Resistance Movement-NRM candidate Charles Lubega Zziridamu who had 16, 880 votes and the National Unity Platform candidate Muhammad Muwonge (NUP) who scored 3,583 votes.
Kisekulo’s supporters had initially expected a walk-over in the race after claiming that Zziridamu was a weak candidate. But after the final tally of the polls held on Friday, Zziriddamu had collected 29,648 votes while Kisekulo scored 14,068 votes.
The bickering between National Resistance Movement NRM members has escalated in Kyotera ahead of elections for the District Woman MP and Local Council chairman. Nominations in the newly-created district ended this week with at least three people who lost in the primaries standing as Independent candidates.
Francis Tumukunde, an official of the NRM Electoral Commission declared Kintu Kisekulo as the official candidate to contest for Kyotera LCV seat. He will now faceoff with Democratic Party candidate Tom Darlington Balloja and FDCs Godfrey Kahweru in the general election scheduled for next month.
He says Joseph Mukasa Ssewava is confusing voters to support his girlfriend Nantongo, claiming that she was endorsed by president, Yoweri Museveni. Kasolo contends that president, Yoweri Museveni is the NRM party chairman and cant send Ssewava who being investigated for car theft.
The new dates followed disagreements between the Electoral Commission and the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM party over a roadmap which designated Thursday August 10 and Friday August 11 as nomination dates for the contenders at the various positions.
Their petition is based on a ruling by High Court Judge Lawrence Gidudu in which Baguma was declared incompetent for messing up elections in Rakai district where he served as Returning Officer in the 2016 elections. Elections from four of the five constituencies in the district were nullified.
However, the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM party had declared August 8-9 as nomination dates for candidates seeking the party ticket and August 15 as election for the NRM party candidate in the new district. But the party election date falls for days ahead of the date set by the national Electoral Commission.
