A police officer who preferred anonymity told URN that the facility was designed to accommodate a maximum of 60 suspects. But, with more people flouting the regulations that were put in place to control the spread of coronavirus disease, there is an increase in arrests, resulting in congestion at the facility.
A senior detective said a review of their records and videos captured at some of these incidents show different guns were used in the killings. For instance, CCTV footage captured at Cheap General Hardware shows the attackers had four motorcycles each carrying two persons and were all armed.
Abas Faama, the Nakilulwe Village LC I Chairperson, says that he has been receiving complaints from residents about a stranger roaming the village with a firearm to conduct night patrols and extort money from unsuspecting civilians. He stresses that the suspect together with others still at large would also snatch money and handbags from women at gunpoint.
The Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire identifies the deceased as Nyameisha Kueth, who has been staying with her stepmother in Nabweru in Nansana Municipality.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, says that the suspects later led police to their hideout where officers recovered forty-six motor-vehicle number plates. According to Owoyesigyire, police swung into action after receiving numerous complaints from Lubowa, Zzana, Bunamwaya, Katale, Bukwenda, Seguku and Nalumunye areas.
"They started from where they stopped upon release from the prison," he says.
Frank Baine, the Uganda Prisons Services Spokesperson says that security personnel will at any time recapture all the remaining escapees since the hunt has never been called off.
