The acting Permanent Secretary, in the Office of the Prime Minister Joel Wanjala, today told Parliaments Public Accounts Committee PAC that whereas there have been shortcomings on the side of the government to resettle survivors earlier; the project implementation had been derailed by strong cultural attachments.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister, Martin Owor the Commissioner for Disaster Management, says that the second season of rainfall is above normal and will be heavy. Mount Elgon region is prone to landslides with natural disasters almost every year killing people and displacing others in the districts of Bududa, Sironko, Mbale, Manafwa, and Bulambuli among others .
Seven of the eighteen victims of the latest landslides in Bududa district who were on Saturday admitted at Bududa Hospital with multiple injuries have been discharged. A four-year-old child was killed and 18 other people were injured in the landslides that ravaged several villages in Bududa district on Saturday afternoon. The landslide swept 16 villages in the parishes of Matuwa, Namirumba, Bumayoka and Bushiyi in Bushiyi Sub County.
Landslide victims in Bududa district are demanding for the accountability of 4.5 billion shillings that Uganda Red Cross Societyâ€”URCS received from the public through fundraising to cater for their welfare.
At least half of the one hundred victims of the recent landslides in Bulucheke sub county in Bududa district, who were recently relocated to safer areas, have fled back to their villages which are considered highly risky. The victims cite negligence by government as the reason for their return.
