The committee identified former Member of Parliament Onapito Ekomoloit, East African Bureau Chief Charles Mwanguhya Mpagi, Daniel Kalinaki, and then Daily Monitor Investigations Editor Chris Obore as potential candidates for the job. Dr Peter G. Mwesige, the Executive Director of the African Centre for Media Excellence was later added to the list.
According to Dr. Mutunga, he was emboldened by the fact that his recruitment was covered fully by the media. He says the coverage gave him an opportunity to speak directly to Kenyans and hence recognized the need to open the judiciary to all Kenyans.
Dr Mutungas lecture titled, Politics, Media and Judicial Independence in Africa will draw on his own experience while at the judiciary to offer insight into how the cutthroat worlds of media and politics affect judicial independence on the continent.
