Sugar companies from Busoga sub-region are seeking Parliament’s intervention in the fight against ‘unfair’ competition from ‘sugar bonds’ which has frustrated local manufacturers.
This afternoon, Fred Tumuheirwe Turyamuhweza, the Rujumbura County MP, said government had gone silent on the bill yet several farmers are suffering exploitation.
Betty Nambooze, the Mukono Municipality MP said since Parliament has given Government one month to consult on the bill, the opposition in parliament will collectively engage in consultations in the Busoga sub-region, Bunyoro sub-region, and any other areas where cane is grown.
The Sugar Bill 2016, which scraps off zoning and puts a standard pricing for sugarcane has been re-tabled be in Parliament following its rejection by the President.
