Francis Akorikin, the Kapelebyong District LC V Chairperson, says that there was a gunfire exchange between the Anti-Stock Theft Unit- ASTU and the rustlers at Kirik Village in Achinga Sub County since Monday night when the suspected thieves were killed.
Maj. Isaac Oware, the 3rd Division Spokesman says that the army recovered 701 cattle, 105 goats and sheep in the same operation across the Karamoja sub region. He adds that 46 suspected cattle thieves were arrested in the same operation and 32 were prosecuted in the court martial.
John Robert Jaka, the Rupa Sub County Area Land Committee chairperson and former LC 3 Chairperson told URN that they have informed the UPDF leadership about the unlawful extension of the boundary but nothing has been done to solve the impasse.
The Uganda Peoples’ Defense Force- UPDF soldiers at the 3rd Division recovered 150 illegal guns in the hands of civilians across the nine districts of Karamoja. This is almost twice, the number of guns recovered in 2019 and 2018 in the region.
Capt. Albert Arinaitwe, the 3rd Division Spokesman says over 70% of gun recoveries and cattle thefts are recorded from Kotido district. He notes that while other districts within Karamoja have tried to engage locals against the acts of theft and illegal possession of firearms, Kotido has remained adamant.
