Hope Murungi, the Coordinator of Private Sector and Civil Society at Uganda AIDS Commission explains that the statistic puts the district in a red zone since domestic violence has been listed among the key drivers of HIV infections. Studies have also shown that in families where there is domestic violence, some partners deliberately infect others with HIV.
Despite the increase of HIV and AIDs prevalence in Mbarara City and Kalangala district Uganda has registered a tremendous improvement in the fight against the HIV and AIDS epidemic leading to a reduction in the number of new HIV infections.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Macklean Kyomya, the Executive Director at Alliance of Women Advocating for Change (AWAC), an organization that advocates for rights of key populations, said that they have recorded complaints of officers breaking into hotel rooms and arresting sex workers while threatening them to pay bribes.
According to Richard Muhindo, the Principal investigator on the study in which researchers assessed 240 female and 100 male sex workers from Kampala and Mbarara, even as these males are not seeking testing services they are also not using condoms in their encounters. He says the respondents were asked about their last sexual encounter and test for syphilis and HIV and they found whereas 85% of women acknowledged using condoms at the last sexual encounter, only 34% of males used protection.
David Kabanda, a social Rights Lawyer who was among the team that was consulted by local NGO UGANET to conduct the study says the majority of the respondents referred to the new drug as ‘ ‘dolotiya’ to mean dolutegravir but when they were asked why they were shifted, 99% said they don’t know why they had to change their regimens. When they asked health workers, 82% of them didn’t know that patients needed to know other than just receiving the medicine.
