The contested land on Kyaggwe block 346, measuring 31 hectares is claimed by Herbert Muyomba and Dorothy Nakimbugwe who have petitioned the court seeking forceful eviction for the continued stay on the land.
Djibrilu Kaisokampanga, the representative of Wakisi division argued that both companies are found within the municipality and they should therefore benefit directly from them.
The municipal council proposed that sugarcane planting be limited to places near the main roads within the three divisions of the Central, Nyenga and Wakisi. The council also proposed complete abolition of sugar growing in the central division and in the areas next to the trading centres of the two divisions citing under development and insecurity in the area.
The municipal secretary for health and education Flavia Musubika says that the distance covered by students is discouraging a number of them from studies. She notes that walking does not only impact on students’ lives physically but also psychologically.
