The boat was loaded with fish worth 40 million Shillings and other merchandise that included timber and a motorcycle. Mawaala LCI chairperson Gerald Kalyango says the boat engine sparked after experiencing a technical problem and lit three jerricans of petrol that were nearby.
According to a source in the fisheries unit who preferred anonymity, they were tipped that several residents in the area are involved in illegal fishing activities.
The commandant of the UPDF Marines Brig Michael Nyarwa says the armed forces need to see zero tolerance to illegal fishing before sanctioning fish smoking activities. He says that the UPDF marines will now assess the situation at various landing sites and guarantee illegal activities have been wiped out.
