A section of Ugandans living in the diaspora want the National Coffee bill 2018 withdrawn said it will lead to exploitation of the farmers and also a decline in the industry.
Byamukama was making reference to the ongoing discussion on the National Coffee bill 2018 which is currently being scrutinized by Parliament's Agriculture committee. The bill proposes the registration of farmers, capturing details of the size of land, the number of coffee trees and particulars of the farmers, coffee buyers and sellers among others.
The Uganda Coffee Federation (UCF) has proposed that the registration of farmers be conducted by value chain actors through their affiliated groups instead of Government registering them.
Appearing before the Agriculture Committee chaired by Janet Okori-moe Akech this morning, the Director of Research in the National Coffee Research Institute, Dr. Geoffrey Arinaitwe, said registering farmers is complicated. He explained that registration of farmers can’t work especially for small holder ones.
