Dr. Gerald Siranda, the Acting DP Secretary General told URN that by the time they arrived at parliament, MPs had dispersed. "We were supposed to appear at 3pm and when we contacted the Chairperson, he said that the committee's earlier meetings had failed forcing the MPs to disperse. He gave us a new appointment for Tuesday next week," said Siranda.
Joseph Kasirye, the Masaka Municipality Democratic Party-DP Organizing Secretary, says he is afraid that once appointed to a government-initiated committee, Civil society organizations will be compromised and eventually lose the impartiality with which they are perceived to execute their duties.
The council meeting, which had started early morning, was expected to end by 2:00PM to allow the consultations to take place. Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee members led by their chairperson, Jacob Oboth Oboth arrived the district headquarters as agreed but were blocked by councilors led Molly Anyeko, the Kisoko- Petta sub county woman representative.
Sheikhat Radhiyyah Namakula Lukwiya, the Secretary of Women Affairs at UMSC, explained that they are not opposed to the bill but it doesn’t apply to Muslims since it goes against the teachings of the Quran.
