According to the PLE results released by UNEB on Thursday, 14 out of the 16 candidates registered by the school failed the exams. Only one candidate, Alex Kenyi, passed in division four with an aggregate score of 33, while another did not show up for the exams.
During the presentation of the results at State House Nakasero on Thursday, UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo announced that 84,301 candidates (10.7% of the total candidates) earned Division One in 2024, a slight decrease from 86,582 candidates (11.7%) in 2023, out of 736,931 candidates who sat the exam that year.
Speaking to our reporter ahead of the official release of the examination results this morning, UNEB Spokesperson Jennifer Kalule revealed that the UNEB portal indicates many schools have outstanding balances, with some accumulating unpaid invoices dating as far back as 2017.
Burton Bbumba, the Headteacher of Luwero Boys Primary School, said that he registered 106 candidates for PLE but 104 were present and sat the examinations. Bbumba explained that one candidate with special needs was withdrawn by the parent, and the second dropped out this term due to domestic violence.
Normal registration fees are set at 34,000 shillings for PLE, 164,000 shillings for UCE, and 186,000 shillings for Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE). Late registration for PLE will incur a 100 percent surcharge, while UCE and UACE candidates will face a 50 percent surcharge.
According to the circular issued on February 9th by the Permanent Secretary Alex Kakooza, pre-candidates in P.7, S.3, and S.6 will report back to school on March 1 and study for 14 weeks before breaking off on May 2021. P.4 and P.5 will report to school on April 6 after Primary Leaving Examination and will study for 8 weeks and break off June 21 to allow lower primary classes to report and use the school facilities.
Ambrose Onoria, the Ngora Resident District Commissioner, says that all unlicensed schools will not be allowed to open for the first term come February 3rd, 2020. Onoria revealed that they have issued notices to all the schools that have not met the requirements to release children they have admitted.
"Normally results are released at a neutral environment. Kampala Parents in this instance is not a neutral place. It has a primary class. It is going to be one of the recipients of the results. This makes one wonder whether government has vested interests in the school," Prof Lutalo said.
