The government recently imposed a $200 export tax on each kilogram of god exported. It also waived royalties on gold produced in the country. Whoever intends to e import gold must possess an importation permit charged at $270.
The amount of gold production reported by DGSM is low compared to gold that was exported as reported by Uganda Revenue Authority. DGSM says URA should explain where the extra gold that was exported came from.
“We are cognizant of the fact that there are challenges we need to address - the digital economies. For example, Jumia, Google, Facebook and Kikuu, to mention but a few are around us. We have all used them in a way or another, and yet we are not registering revenue numbers in terms of collections from them,” Akol said.
