St. Charles Lwanga, commonly known as “Karooli Lwanga” is one of the three Catholic Martyrs whose origin is Masaka diocese. The others are Bruno Sserunkuuma and John Mary Muzeeyi.
Reverend Father Simeon Laudel Mapel and Brother Amans Delmas, who introduced the Catholic faith in Uganda arrived from France in February 1879 through Lake Victoria on their journey to meet Kabaka Edward Muteesa I of Buganda to seek permission to evangelize the area.
Reverend Monsignor Serverus Jumba, the Bishop of Masaka Diocese says the White Fathers have got very strong attachment to the area, especially in the parish of Villa Maria, which is equally of great significance in the history of the faith in Uganda and the Sub-Saharan Africa.
