During the presentation of the results at State House Nakasero on Thursday, UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo announced that 84,301 candidates (10.7% of the total candidates) earned Division One in 2024, a slight decrease from 86,582 candidates (11.7%) in 2023, out of 736,931 candidates who sat the exam that year.
Jennifer Kalule Musamba, the UNEB spokesperson has confirmed that the sample papers are now available, and they distribute them to schools to familiarize both teachers and students with the format of Competency Based Assessment (CBA) questions.
He, however, adds that even though the country has been on lockdown, UNEB will not compromise on standards and therefore he urges candidates to make sure that they use every opportunity and platform put in place by government and schools to study across the curriculum.
Unlike in the past where candidates’ marks were transferred from various marking centers across the country to UNEB offices in Kyambogo where they would be entered in a data base manually, under the new system marks are entered into the database from the different marking cites.
Mrs Museveni says the result of the practices is that some topics are skipped or lightly dealt with and in the end, learners miss out the basic principles adding that revision is ineffective when learners have not understood the subject matter.
According to the Uganda National Education Board Executive Secretary Dan Odongo, although there has been an overall improvement performance in a number of subjects, there is still a challenge in overall pass levels for science subjects.
UNEB Chairperson Prof. Mary Okwakol says that the cases of examination malpractice in school were supported by headteachers. “In some schools, scouts were even bribed to allow teachers to give candidates assistance," Okwakol said.
