The cost of lockups in Usafi market will drop from 480,000 to 288,000 Shillings. Stalls which were previously hired at 150,000 Shillings will now cost 90,000 Shillings while those hired at 45,000 Shillings will now go for 13,000 Shillings. The 6500 Shillings stall remains unchanged.
On the first floor, rates for lock-ups have been cut depending on their size. For example 58 lock ups occupying 3.3 square meters will pay UGX70,000 Shillings down from UGX100,000 Shillings while those occupying 8.1 square meters are to pay 175,000 Shillings down from 250, 000 Shillings.
The center, built with four washrooms, three study rooms and a playground is meant to cater for children below school going age whose parents form part of the market community. The idea was to have them taken care of in one place instead of leaving then to wander around the market.
The much hyped opening of the 1,200 stall market was initially planned for 1st November. But Peter Kaujju, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Publicist maintains that the market will be operational before the end of this month.
Government has released 21 billion shillings for the redevelopment of Wandgeya market. On Sunday, Kampala Capital City Authority embarked on the demolition of the dilapidated market structure constructed in the 1930s.
