The fishermen told URN on Thursday that some fishermen had resorted to fish poisoning so as to harvest more yet in the long run threatening the sustainability of the fisheries sector to compete on the global market.
On Wednesday, a team of motorized, non-motorized and non-uniformed officers were seen patrolling black spots at Magamaga, Baitambogwe, Bulanga, Iganga CMS, Nakalama, Namutumba town council area and Busowa. The patrols stem from a spate of accidents in the region, which have claimed more than 21 people within a space of one week.
The officers were equipped with skills in repairing small guns like pistols, AK-47, and other fighter riffles during peace support operations and wartime periods. The trained officers carry the mandate of safeguarding firearms in the different armoury where they shall be deployed by their respective commanders.
