James Obot, the head teacher of the school, who is also the UNATU Chairperson in Otuke district explains that the turn-up was low even before the teacher’s strike. He explains that parents opted to keep children at home to help with garden work.
Teacher’s under the Uganda National teacher’s Union-UNATU started an indefinite nationwide strike on June 15, in protest of the government's decision to raise the pay for certain teachers in violation of past agreements that guaranteed equality and harmonization of salaries for all teachers.
The teachers note despite continuous promises made by the government in 2017 to date about increasing the salaries of science teachers, date no money has been allocated to this cause.
