Over the past three years, banana farmers in the districts of Nebbi, Arua, Zombo, Maracha, Terego and Arua City have been battling with the disease, which causes severe stunting and bunching of banana leaves and complete loss of fruit production especially in the second season of production.
According to the Ministry, the field survey findings will help them in planning for an effective intervention plan depending on the level of disease spread.
The disease known as Banana Bunchy Top Virus affects the banana bunches by entering the plant and stopping it from forming bunches. Diseased plants rarely produce fruit and when they do, the fruit is stunted and twisted.
