State Minister for Local Government Jennifer Namuyangu last month announced that the collection of the 10 percent charges on every land transaction by village chairpersons was illegal because it is not provided for under the Local Governments and Local Council Regulations Acts.
Gabindadde Musoke, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands says the registration that is expected to start in June, 2015 will follow a policy underlining guidelines and requirements for persons dealing in the real estate. According to the Ministry, the real estate industry in Uganda has been growing over the years but with no regulation.
Parliament has given government one month to produce a report on the illegal evictions across the country. The directive came as Parliament passed a motion by Wakiso Woman MP, Rosemary Sseninde, for a resolution of Parliament to urge government to inquire into the recurring illegal land evictions in the country.
