Last week the herdsmen during a crisis meeting convened at rainbow motel in Sembabule town council gave the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries an ultimatum to lift the quarantine or else they demonstrate.
According to Dr. Ntume, the disease is still prevalent in some animals in Kayira village believed to have originated from Kalisizo in Rakai district. He assured residents that the meat on the market is safe for human consumption, saying it has been inspected approved by the department for sale.
Herdsmen at Mutukula border post have asked the veterinary authorities to lift a ban imposed on the sale and transport of livestock in Rakai district due to an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). The herdsmen made the call during a village meeting called by the village assembly leaders to discuss the problems affecting the area.
Major livestock markets in Rakai District may remain closed during the Christmas and New Year festive period if the quarantine imposed on them due to the presence of foot and mouth disease is not lifted.
