Delivering his speech during the World Malaria Day 2025 commemoration, Dr. Medard K. Bitekyerezo, the UCCM Chairperson, commended the Government of Uganda, civil society organizations, and development partners for prioritizing evidence-based approaches.
Dr Charles Olaro, the Director of Clinical Services at the Ministry of Health says that with the emergency, they have had to halt a lot of interventions into malaria including indoor residual spraying and mass mosquito net distribution, something he worries could prove as disastrous as the current pandemic if individuals don’t take personal initiatives to protect themselves from getting infected.
Despite the abuse of the mosquito nets over the years by members of the public, Dr. Opigo says that they have managed to make some strides regarding the number of people who die from malaria per day.
The new guide, \"From malaria control to malaria elimination will help countries assess what resources they need to reduce malaria transmission to very low levels. It will also help them consider appropriate timelines and provide them with essential knowledge for long-term strategic planning for malaria programmes.
The Ministry of Health will Friday roll out the distribution of 21 million insecticide treated mosquito nets throughout the country. Sarah Opendi, the Minister of State for Primary Health Care, said although similar distributions have been done in the past, some people were using the mosquito nets for wrong purposes such as fishing and making wedding gowns.
As Uganda joins the rest of the world to mark the International Malaria Day, residents of Oyam district have been accused of frustrating the fight against the disease.
