Kilama and 32 others were convicted by the Pader District Chief Magistrate’s Court on March 9, 2023, for unlawful assembly and inciting violence. The charges resulted from a protest held on December 6 and 7, 2021, against security forces during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Appearing before the court, Kilama’s lawyer, Godfrey Anyuru, argued that his client was convicted without due legal process and that the charges against him were fictitious.
Kilama, who is also the Democratic Party (DP) Chairperson for Pader District, was reportedly apprehended by armed operatives in civilian clothing at the court's entrance. Cliph Atare, DP spokesperson for Pader District, stated, “He was assaulted before Kilama was whisked away to an unknown destination.”
