Joseph Besigye, the LC 3 chairperson, Birere Sub County, says the displaced people have taken refuge in churches and schools. According to Besigye, they are still assessing the magnitude of the destruction before deciding their next course of action.
Dr. Bruhan Kasozi, the Isingiro District Veterinary Officer, suspects the affected people ate meat from a carcass smuggled out of queen Lake Mburo National park. He says several people in the area eat meat from untrusted sources.
Police have arrested the Isingiro district chairperson Jeremiah Kamurali on charges of inciting violence. According to Ivan Nuwamanya, the Rwizi regional police commander, Kamurali is wanted for inciting people to attack refugees in Nakivale refugee camp and grab part of the land that they occupy.
A group of drivers accuse Isingiro Town Council Taxi Owners and Drivers Cooperative Society of overcharging and cheating them. They accuse the same group of operating without a valid contract, and torturing drivers in execution of the questionable mandate.
The registration that started late November covers the districts of Mbarara, Bushenyi, Isingiro, Ntungamo, Kabale, Kisoro, Kanungu, and Rubanda. It comes at the backdrop of complaints on the failure to control developments on the banks of River Rwizi in Mbarara and other major wetlands.
Sempijja accuses the local authorities for politicizing the livestock quarantine, which compromises efforts by the Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries Ministry to stamp out the foot and mouth disease from Isingiro district.
