The government of Uganda pays a monthly fee of 10,000 Shillings to each village chairperson as recognition for their work. However, the money is paid out once every financial year in a lump sum of 120,000 Shillings.
Village chairpersons are supposed to receive an allocation of 10,000 Shillings every month, which is paid once, every financial year. The LCs are now demanding a sum of 120,000 Shillings for the financial year 2019/2020.
The angry councillors defied pleas from the speaker, Agnes Lokochil, Deputy Speaker Irar Peter Abrahams and the Town Clerk Seleverio Mukobi Byarufu to proceed with the council session.
About 78 village chiefs within Lira Municipality on Monday evening received their annual payment after months of accusations between the district and \\municipal authorities over the money.
