In July 2021, the government of Uganda launched Usalama Kwa Yote Operations to disarm all the Karamojong who had illegal firearms. The operations have seen considerable success since its inception.
The report shows that 1170 guns and 9217 rounds of ammunition were seized while 53,253 livestock were recovered, 29,321 suspected cattle rustlers were arrested and 2091 have been prosecuted.
There are four border districts in Karamoja including Moroto, Amudat, Kaabong and Karenga which share a common border with South Sudan and Kenya. However, as South Sudan and Kenya register more COVID –19 cases, there are growing concerns of importation of the virus through the border posts in Karamoja.
Dr. Fredrick Kugonza, the Hoima District Disease Surveillance Officer, says such people are a huge concern to health workers and local authorities trying to prevent any further cross-border contamination.
Lydia Chesang, the Riwo Sub County LC V councilor, says they are concerned with the delayed the construction of the barracks promised by President, Yoweri Museveni to stop attacks by Pokot militias.
Buliisa Resident District Commissioner-RDC Florence Beyunga says the ban followed a realization that those staging discos compromised security. Beyunga who doubles as the chairperson district security committee says the disco operators in the district often lack security gadgets to check persons that enter disco halls.
