In Mubende, artisanal miners evicted in 2017 have slowly been allowed to resume operations after the government agreed to grant licenses to organized groups. Their counterparts in Buhweju now say they do not know why their activities remain banned yet there is a lot of illegal mining and export of various minerals including gold and wolfram.

Indeed, environmentalists say that nature has been degraded in all areas of the country where mining activities are carried out. Buhweju District Natural Resources Officer Celemesia Birungi says that poor mining methods have ruined all wetlands in the area. Birungi also decried the spillage of chemicals into the environment.

Joseph Okedi, an Assistant Commissioner in Charge of Mining in an interview neither denied nor confirmed the allegations that corruption is undermining the sector. Okedi says the Mineral and Mining Policy of 2016 is just one of the reforms in the sector.
