He cautioned the parties to the south Sudan Conflict to be mindful of politics driven by opportunism which has brought a lot of suffering to Africa and cost it development. In the last 58 years, I have been watching the Africans here. There have been so many mistakes, so much suffering because of the politics of opportunism, that that takes advantage of identity.

In a report released on Tuesday, the UN human rights office, OHCHR, noted the deliberate and brutally violent targeting of civilians, particularly women and children, in April and May. According to the report, at least 120 women and girls were raped and those unable to flee were killed as part of a deliberate scorched earth policy that has displaced thousands of people.

He says the attack by government forces on their positions shows that it is unwilling to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the problems affecting the country.

He says that according to the agenda, they were also meant to evaluate the March 23rd 2009 Agreement with government which was breached by government.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made this remark during a meeting with NGO representatives in New York on Wednesday.
