Kenneth Male Nsereko, the LC I chairperson Seguku Cell 4, says the affected building was sitting in a wetland. He says a number of residents are increasingly building in wetlands, which affects the water flow.
The building housing Cornerstone Hotel located on Magambo Street collapsed at 9:00am today, Thursday, under the weight of two water tanks which had been installed on top of a section of the building. Jimmy Balewa, the Fort Portal Municipal Engineer, says that due to the weight of the water tanks, the walls developed cracks forcing the building to collapse. The tanks had a capacity of 20,000 litres of water each.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango told URN that the excavation will continue until all occupants of the building have been accounted for. He added that so far four bodies have been recovered. The dead were identified as Emma Kitumba, Isaac Bukenya and Rashida Kyobe.
