Bussi Island, which is 10kilometers away from Entebbe town, remains secluded and visibly detached from the rest of Wakiso district because of poor physical infrastructure and lack of proper transport means.
The CSO’s with help from two French-based organizations including Friends of the Earth and Survie dragged Total to Nanterre High court claiming that through its subsidiary Total E&P Uganda had failed to come up with a vigilance plan to address the human and environmental impact of its operations at Tilenga site in the Albertine region as required by the 2017 French law on duty of vigilance.
The inland port project had for long suffered from land woes involving 1,285 current occupants and the government. However, the two parties later reached an understanding that the earmarked land close to 500 acres situated in Bukasa in Kira Municipality belonged to the government since it was a gazetted forest.
Eric Kanyange, another resident notes that he had been given a compensation number with his property valued at Shillings 51 million and has all the documents but he was surprised to find that his name and reference number were missing on the list of people who were due to collect their monies.
According to the occupants, they have been under threats of eviction since 2016 and are worried that Mengo through Buganda Land Board-BLB may evict them anytime without due compensation despite occupying land for more than 30 years.
