Buhweju District Police Commander Ben Nuwamanya says that the three had encroached on a bigger part of the wetland and turned it into a grazing and farming area. The suspects are now held at Buhweju Police Station.
The scheme constructed in 1967 has been supplying water to key institutions across the district, among them, Itojo Hospital, Itojo Primary School and Ruhanga Secondary School among others. The scheme is also the main source of water for domestic use and farming activities in Itojo Sub County.
Residents are accusing the corporation of failing to maintain constant flow of water over the last six months and offering no explanation for the shortfall.
Barnabas Musimenta, the NWSC technical advisor Muhanga branch, says the Rwahi water project hasnt been abandoned. According to Musimenta, NWSC suspended the works after realizing they need a booster pump to serve the new clients.
Joshua Kwarikunda, one of the affected residents says in addition to the bad smell, he lost six pigs on Wednesday when they consumed the sludge that was discharged into his garden.
