Dr. Ben Watmon, the Director Moroto Regional Referral Hospital, says there is a lot of stigma related to COVID-19 and lack of knowledge on the virus. He was addressing a team of Greater North COVID-19 Parliament Taskforce led by Koboko Municipality MP, Charles Ayume.
He said the man reported to Moroto Hospital on September 10 with Tuberculosis. However, health samples taken from him tested positive to COVID-19. Dr Watmon says that after the result, the patient was immediately admitted to the isolation unit, where he passed on last night.
Sources who asked not to be named for fear of reprimand, said a male suspect attempted to escape in the dead of last night and made another attempt this afternoon at around 4 pm. The case was admitted to the treatment centre on Monday night.
According to Simon Ondoga a senior nutritionist in Moroto Regional Referral Hospital, the malnutrition rate in the region has grown from three in 10 children under five years in 2018 to four in 10 children currently. He told URN today on Thursday that most of the cases suffer from acute malnutrition, a condition that leads to stunting, and low brain development.
The recommendation comes after the World Health Organization-WHO officer for Karamoja Field Office Dr Ken Kabali completed a training of medical workers at the referral hospital on how to handle cases of the virus if it breaks out.
“Dr. Ogwang has been caretaking the hospital but the substantive Hospital Director has been appointed. He embarks on his duties in the hospital as earlier indicated before he was given responsibility of caretaking the hospital”, he said on phone.
The couple recorded the statement at Moroto Central Police Station following the arrest of the same Doctor by the State House Anti- Corruption Unit. He was arrested on Tuesday by the team led by Lt. Col. Edith Nakalema following complaints of unprofessional conduct lodged against him.
Charles Denaya, the officer in- charge Moroto Central Police Station, says that the officials were released on Wednesday. He, however, says that Dr Phillip Akunguru, the staff at Moroto Regional Referral Hospital who is accused of stealing drugs and conducting illegal procedures including removal of uteruses is still in custody.

In Moroto Regional Referral Hospital, a few staff use the Biometric Machine. Since its installation in 2016, only 171 staff are registered in the finger data capture machine out of 221 staff working in the hospital.
Dr. Atwine interdicted Dr. Nyeko on March 30th, 2018 for alleged embezzlement and misappropriation of over Shillings 50 million meant for the maintenance of the regional workshop in the financial year 2015/16.
The ultimatum comes at a time the hospital is overwhelmed with issues of unclaimed bodies that have tainted its image. Early this month, Moroto Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary had 14 unclaimed bodies which had stayed for months.
Mark Aol Musooka, the Board Chairperson of Management Moroto Regional Referral Hospital, says that while the issue of unclaimed bodies isnt new, he is surprised with the new trend of abandoning patients in the hospital.
