Parliament this evening passed a motion seeking to declare a state of emergency in the country over the hunger. The Legislators unanimously voted in favour of a motion moved by Kumi Woman Member of Parliament Monica Amoding, stating that Government has failed to handle the situation and people are suffering from hunger.
According to the Ministry of Education and Sports ministerial policy statement, there is a funding shortfall of 18 billion Shillings needed for the next cohort of students under the Students Loan Scheme. This is in addition to recruitment of 2,000 science teachers for secondary schools that also requires 18 billion Shillings, construction of 100 primary schools costed at 49.1 billion and 20 secondary schools in sub-counties without any government-aided secondary school costed at 9.4 billion Shillings.
Parents of Njara Hill Primary School in Fort Portal have protested a decision by the Parents Teachers Association PTA that each pupil contributes 22,000 Shillings to purchase a vehicle for the head teacher. The PTA committee wants to purchase a Toyota RAV4 at 20 million Shillings as a reward to John Bagonza for good performance. The Commission on Tuesday issued certificates of blanket amnesty to 45-year-old Bosco Kilama and 21-year-old Simon Peter Ochora.
