Under the law, drivers are required to look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross. However, the highway code legally bounds drivers to stop only if a pedestrian has stepped onto the crossing. The code also bars drivers from overtaking on or near a zebra crossing as well as parking vehicles within five meters of the crossing.
