The Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court in Kampala released on bail four of the five activists who were remanded last week on charges of common nuisance and being idle and disorderly. The group is part of those remanded after staging a protest in the Anita Must Resign Protest in Kampala.t Corruption.

They include Thomas Kanzira a medical doctor, Faiza Salima a Journalist, Bernard Olupot a marketeer and Hamala Edgar Barlow a senior photographer. They were ordered to pay 200,000 shillings each cash bail by Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Khidasa.

Their sureties who included relatives and friends were ordered to sign non-cash bond forms of 500,000 shillings.

The same court has however denied bail to their co-accused Aljab Musinguzi a resident of Nakawa Division because his  Introduction letter from the LC1 Chairperson was different from his area of residence.

Prosecution states that the accused on 23rd July 2024 at Parliamentary Avenue and  Oasis Mall Nakumat made a procession in the middle of the road while carrying placards demanding the resignation of the speaker of parliament  Anita Annet Among; an act not authorized by law and therefore by annoying the public.

It is further said that the suspects publicly conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace.

The was among the more than 100 people sent to prison last week for staging demonstrations in Kampala protesting corruption in the country specifically against the Speaker of Parliament.

The protests by these youth came at a time when Kenya was recovering from similar violent protests against the Controversial Finance Bill.

The protests led by the youth dubbed Generation Z led to the destruction of property, looting, and burning down some government buildings. More than 40 were reported to have died.

Weeks later, the citizens of Uganda tried to copy the Kenyans and also took on the streets to protest Corruption in the Country.

However, President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has since said that the protestors were planning very bad things against Uganda than just the charges of "idle and disorderlyā€¯ levied against them by police.

Museveni said the Police Officer who preferred the charges was not privy to the intelligence the president has and that his (Museveni's) evidence would shock the nation.
