A counter terrorism constable has shot dead his step son and injured another severely before taking his own life. 

The incident occurred in the wee hours of Monday morning in Kinawataka suburbs in Nakawa Division of Kampala district.    

The police constable only identified as David Muhereza allegedly killed 12-year-old Sulaiman Kisole and injured 3-year-old Samantha Atuhaire shortly developing a quarrel with his Jamila Nanyombi. 

According to available information, shortly after quarrelling with Muhereza, Nanyombi fled to report to Kinawataka police.    

She however, heard gun shots before arriving at the police station. Officers from the station responded to the gunfire only to find Muhereza had gunned down Kisole and injured Atuhaire before shooting himself. 

The third child identified as Johana Lukwago managed to escape. 

Nanyombi told police that Muhereza found her with three children and started harassing them whenever he could return home drunk at midnight.  

Police spokesman, Fred Enanga, says Muhereza shot himself 2 times in the mandible and died on spot.

According to Enanga, the Inspector General of Police, Martins Okoth Ochola has reached out to the affected family to express his heartfelt condolences, adding that they are looking forward to supporting the family with the burial arrangements.   

Enanga says the IGP has ordered the Police Welfare Department to expedite the mandatory mental checkup of all police officers to ascertain their psychological status.
