A dog has Stolen a Suspect's Amputated Leg and dumped it on Gulu Street
A stray dog on Wednesday sneaked inside Gulu Regional Referral Hospital and sneaked away with an amputated limb of a patient from the precincts of the operation theatre.

The limbs amputations are normally sent to biohazard crematorium for incineration. But this particular one was found abandoned in Gulu town in the middle of Eden Road, between the road junction at the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs regional office and Bomah Hotel in Senior Quarters.

The management of the hospital remained mute and tight-lipped on the matter, which is linked to poor waste disposal at the referral facility that sits in East Division of Gulu City.

A senior health official who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal said the amputated limb was of no use although a dog fleeing with the body part was indeed a serious lapse as it poses dangers of spreading disease as other rotting animal tissues would.

Nancy Atimango, a resident of the Gulu City East Division described the leg which was cut from above the knee level s as a horrific and traumatising sight in broad daylight. Robert Olal, another concerned resident of Gulu City observed that the incident showed gaps in proper ways of waste disposal and management at the hospital.

Gulu Resident District Commissioner and Chairperson District Security Committee Maj. Santo Okot Lapolo revealed that the limb belonged to an inmate who was shot during a foiled escape from lawful detention at Pece Prison.

On October 16, Kennedy Ocaya and Alex Oyet charged with murder and burglary cases respectively attempted to escape from Pece Prison but they were intercepted. Ocaya who allegedly attempted to grab a gun from a Prison Warder was shot in the leg and later amputated.

Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema confirmed to URN that the duo was admitted Gulu Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. A case of escape from lawful custody was recorded at Gulu Central Police Station vide CRB1165/2020.
